The blades on the sharpeners I ordered can be removed. I think when a blade gets dull I'll sharpen it and add a micro-bevel.

One problem with sharpening the blades is it moves the position of the edge. Eventually the edge is removed from where the sharpening magic happens.Originally Posted by Jerry Thompson

Never sharpened one that much. On the German ones the point is never all the way to the end. Don’t know about the others.

I’m a big fan of the stuff from the early 20th century, particularly when it was over-engineered.
Check out the Jupiter pencil sharpener. I wish I had space in my shop for one of these things.

One of the first garage projects was mounting a wall sharpener. My father had one so it seemed the right thing for me to do.
Not for garage use but the best point you can get. This combined with some Palomino Blackwings.

Blackwings are too soft for me. I use Eagle, Berol and earlier manufacturers, Mikado/Mirado no. 3's and no. 4's. Only once in a while no. 2's.

I had no idea there was so much to consider in pencil sharpeners. Personally, I'm looking for one that's big and bulky and clips on my belt, to make up for some perceived inadequacies in my measuring tape.

I was curious about that Kunz, so I ordered a new M&R and the Kunz. Using new unsharpened no.4 Eagle Mirado's out of the same box, I did a one after the other test. There was no comparison. The M&R sheared away cleanly and quickly to a Very sharp point. The Kunz didn't cut as cleanly and wouldn't take it to as sharp of a point because it was not shearing the cut but rather crumbling it away. The Kunz also had to be emptied. The Kunz also is bigger than I want to take up room in a pocket even on my tool belt.
For a pencil sharpener to keep in your pocket or tool belt, I highly recommend the M & R, and the blade can be sharpened without a lot of trouble but it comes decently sharp to start with. The new one did not work quite as well as the older one in my tool belt that has been sharpened a number of times, but there is no need to sharpen it to start with.
