    Door Rail & Stile Size

I've been asked by my local Habitat For Humanity to make an access door for a space under some stairs. The rough opening is 38 1/4" H x 22. 1/2" wide. I'm trying to decide the width of the rails & stiles. What would you suggest?

Our kitchen wall cabinets are 35" high. The largest single-door unit is 21" wide. So, not too far from your dimensions. Rails and stiles are all 2-1/4" - proportions look about right to me.

Thanks Gary. That's a bit narrower than I envisioned but good to know that proportionally it looks good.

The hinges might influence the door construction. Think them out before you make sawdust.

The door is going to be standard 1 3/8" thick so I'll be using 3 1/2" hinges.

Ah, so this is a small "people door", not a cabinet door. That might influence what you think looks right.
