    Friday Morning Moving Sale

Just when I thought the garage sale season was over.....up pops a "Moving sale" Decided to motor down that way, and look around...

Tried to get a pair of rusty handsaws....for a couple dollars.....no-go.....$8 a piece? Hmmmmm, one saw seemed to be worth the cost..
    IMG_2552 (640x480).jpg
And one for parts.....Parts saw did have the remains of a nib...
    IMG_2551 (640x480).jpg
Meh. 8ppi was a bit too rusty....Maybe I can use the parts?
    IMG_2550 (640x480).jpg
2 bolts....I can keep the handle for other saws....I removed the handle..had to hammer it off...because of all the extra holes in the plate, with burrs...apparently it is a replacement handle. Bolts weren't even the same.....parts saw.
    Now that other saw?

According to the Disstonian site, this was a D-112, about 1928 or so. 7ppi, 26" skew back, filed crosscut, and still very sharp!

Might be worth cleaning it up. At least I can shine the brass stuff up....
Stay tuned...will post more, when I get the Disston cleaned up....

  2. Nice haul!

I recently pulled all of my auction/estate sale/flea market pickups that hadn't been brought in from the car. I should pick through and see if anything worth talking about is in there.

OK...anyone know what saw handle fits this "thing"...doesn't match any of mine..
    IMG_2554 (640x480).jpg
And, the reason I will wind up tossing it out...

    IMG_2553 (640x480).jpg
Laid out a few toys, tonight..
    IMG_2555 (640x480).jpg
The nail set is to push the bolts out. Wire wheeled to clean the bolts..
    IMG_2556 (640x480).jpg
Then stashed them away, so they won't run/roll away. Set the handle aside....
    IMG_2557 (640x480).jpg
Will get back to that, in a bit....needed to remove some rustiness...
    IMG_2558 (640x480).jpg
    Sander, mainly...
    IMG_2561 (640x480).jpg
Got both sides cleaned and shiny......then changed sandpaper, and removed the old finish, cleaned up a few bad spots...
    IMG_2562 (640x480).jpg
Then a few coats of wipe-on amber shellac, since it was handy..

Part2: coming up....the finished saw, and a test drive.....

    Ok...cleaned saw?
    IMG_2563 (640x480).jpg
    Clocked the slots.
    IMG_2564 (640x480).jpg
The "show side"...and an over all view..
    IMG_2565 (640x480).jpg
Marked a cut line on some scrap pine, and clamped it in the vise..
    IMG_2566 (640x480).jpg
And made a test cut with the saw...since the shellac was dry..
    IMG_2567 (640x480).jpg
Seemed to cut quite nicely....Might be a "keeper"?

    Steven,

    Definitely a keeper. Good job.

Question: Is the other saw blade clean of pitting enough on both sides in any location to make into scrapers?

    Regards,

    Stew

Ok, took a while.....cut about 2" off the handle end, to remove all those extra holes. Used a spare four bolt handle I have, marked for the holes to be drilled. Took a bit of fiddling around, to get it to fit about right....Has a few dents in the plate that got pounded out. Area beyond the nib is very dimpled....may just cut that off, and call this a panel saw...pictures tomorrow....turned out to be a 8ppi tooth count. Cuts nice as a crosscut....may leave it as a "loaner".....

New handle did have a crack in it..
    IMG_2569 (640x480).jpg
Tooth length is now at 24" 8ppi panel saw...
    IMG_2568 (640x480).jpg
Hated to just throw it away. Plate is dark due to all the "patina" and a rub down in 3in1 oil to keep the rust-bunnies at bay. Thought about re-doing the nib....maybe another day? The block it sits on has a kerf the saw cut. Seemed to hold things upright.

Ok...so, now I have a D-112, a couple D-8s, a Richardson Brothers and an Atkins version of this saw....Wondering which to use the most. May have to kick a couple "lesser" saws out of the til. The No. 7s will have to stay, though. Hmmm.....Possible to have too many saw?

    Pictures?
    IMG_2591 (640x480).jpg
    Three crosscut saws....the D-112, a No. 59 and a No. 8
    IMG_2592 (640x480).jpg
    Atkins #59......
    IMG_2593 (640x480).jpg
    Richardson Brothers No. 8
    IMG_2594 (640x480).jpg
    1928 model, Disston D-112
Couple other of my "better" saw..
    IMG_2595 (640x480).jpg
    A 1953 Disston D-8, 8ppi...and a pre-1928 No.7...7ppi, with nib.

Might be a decent start on saws.....

Correct, it "might be a decent start on saws" since you had none. No wait, you did not have none.

I will be right on over to take care of those for you!

Nice Score Steve, you did a good job of cleaning those up.

Nice that they are still sharp.

Do you sharpen your own saws (he asks expecting that the answer must be yes even though I do not remember him ever saying so)?
