    Identify Wood Type

    here are a couple pics of some wood. I am not sure if they are both oak, but they came from my oak pile of lumber. (I had bought a truck load of lumber, different species a while back, so could be some other species)

    Now what I am 100% is oak!

    I think if it looks like oak cuts like oak and smells like oak then it's Oak.
    White oak is my guess.

    Thanks, what different oaks are there, i know there are white and red. Both white??

    There are roughly 600 species of Oak. If your primary concern is red or white, look at the end grain. The Red has open pores and the white pores are mostly closed / filled.

    Sure looks like white oak to me.

    I don't have much experience with white oak, but this is a spitting image of the post oak I'm working with now. Post oak is just another type of white oak and maybe they all look similar or the same, but it does look exactly like post oak.

    Cut a thin (1/8") slice off the end and and hold it up to the light. If you can see light through it, it is red oak.....

    That's white oak - probably quercus alba.
