    What else this week.

Went to the family Doctor Saturday. I started going to her when I was a teenager. I'm now just south of 50. She said she was retiring by years end. She was the kind of Doctor I could just walk in and see her. Call for an appointment at 9am Saturday, be in her office by 10:30
Called another Dr. office recommended to me. Asked if they accepted new patients. They said sure. When can I get an appointment? Next available is December

Went to an appointment with a specialist Wednesday. Turned out he had a sudden illness and retired effective immediately.

Have had the same insurance agent for years. Rates skyrocket for no reason. Wednesday had to shop for a new insurance co. Found out I was overpaying at my old insurance to the tune of over $1,000 year.

My HVAC guy, who was self employed, started servicing our furnace and air conditioner right around 1980. I could call and get anything fixed within 2 to 4 hours. Never had to go get parts. He had anything he needed on his pickup truck (Not a van like most places today)
I got to thinking he was always here by now for a fall tuneup. I called today and one of the big name HVAC co. answered. Said my guy retired and moved to Florida I asked about what they charged. Double what I was paying.

Surprised Sawmillcreek was up and running today with my luck.

Hang in there Dave. I've had weeks like you describe. It'll eventually clear up.

As far as insurance goes, make sure you're comparing apples to apples on coverage and deductables. Also, sometimes they bring you on at a low price and raise your rates over the next couple years (DAMHIKT).

I wouldn't sweat the first-appointment thing too much. They usually have limited spots for new patients, but once you past that they are much quicker.

Shop insurance every 6 months. I don't follow this advice consistently but, save money on like services every time I do. AARP (Hartford) was charging dad $165 a month for lesser services than Kaiser offers for $20. Auto/home insurance is the easiest to shop by phone and I save money every time. The days of rewarding the consistent customer are lost in the sands of time.

My doctor told me he would continue to treat me after I reach 65 but he doesn't accept new Medicare patients due to inadequate compensation. I am hearing that same thing from people passing 65 all over the place. I don't know what I will do if my doctor retires before I die. It is illegal for me to pay a doctor over and above what Medicare pays.

My doctor doesn't accept Medicare - Period! You pay up front, and file for reimbersment. Insurance co only pays what they would have paid under Medicare.

A few years ago, my personal physician of over 30 years and I had a discussion. His opinion was that because of the huge differences between what family practitioners make and specialists like radiologists or surgeons make, fewer medical students are going into the general medical field or family practitioner field as it is now called. He was right. It's especially true in rural areas where some small hospitals are having to shut down and become nothing more than nursing homes for elderly patients because they can't get doctors to staff the facility.

My personal physician saw me for the last time mid-August of this year as he was retiring at the end of August and he recommended two other family practitioners. One of the alternative physicians, due to the sale of the hospital where he is staffed isn't taking any new patients currently, so I was able to get accepted by the other one. I saw him for a basic "meet and greet" mid-September. He seemed like a nice enough guy. At the end I had to ask "Doc...how old are you?" His reply was "I am 31 years old." I have a granddaughter that same age. Wow! I am getting old!
