    Planing without a robe

Everything I know about Japanese planes comes from studying the pictures Brian posts. Like many others, I have concluded the robe and slippers are essential. The link below is shattering my entire understanding of the world. Can anyone explain this? Help me SMC, you're my only hope.

Amazing stuff. I need to further investigate the use of Japanese woodworking tools.

Perhaps one of several varieties of Japanese cedar; Most likely Hinoki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamaecyparis_obtusa

Hinoki is an excellent wood with a wonderful smell that shines beautifully when planed well. Similar to Alaskan Cedar and Port Orford Cedar, but without the sharp odor.

I enjoy that video, I would imagine it gets pretty tough to pull that plane at that width.
    Bumbling forward into the unknown.

You guys act like you've never seen an ancient Japanese paper towel dispenser before.
