Last year I gave all mine away to relatives at the holiday party. To avoid the "Why is he giving the bowls to Robbie?" problem (it happened), I did a raffle for the bowls. Each bowl had a raffle...
Lee Valley today, Tim Hortons tomorrow.
Wow, what a great piece of machinery. It looks like the next generation is ready to go. There is no greater gift than imparting your skills and knowledge to the next in line.

I dunno, someone could shoot their eye out with that laser.

I bought a set 20+ years ago from Garrett Wade as part of a throw in to get their catalog. Spent a lot of time dreaming through their catalog. And I still use the gimlets a couple times a year.

Is it better to laminate a benchtop (8/4 maple) or if available use a properly/kiln dried slab?

It's a nice kit. I built one a couple years back. My only advice is not to over tighten the string. There is a lot of tension on the ends and they could break. Don't ask how I know this.
Something bent.
My friend and I were discussing this thread. I told him that anyone who is purchasing a LV or LN plane would probably have a good idea of what they purchased and how to use it. He smiled, shook his...
Mine came the other day. There are a couple marks that would of appeared after some shop time. I guess we all did ok.

Very well done. My 2013 project goals are a new workbench and cabinet. I think your cabinet has inspired me to move in that direction first.
I really like the interior door on the left.

It seems like a present that a Jay Leno or Brad Pitt would get if he made an off handed remark that he would like to get into woodworking.
Looking at the economics of the box, I think the article...
I was visiting my friend's hardware store when one of the clerks asked my friend a question. He had a Fuller #3 ish plane that a customer didn't know how to put back together. He looked slightly...
I purchased a LN dovetail and tenon saw off a guy who was downsizing. Kind of mentioned I may have to send it back for sharpening as he had no luck with them. Took it over to my buddies' place for a...
Anyway guys, here are a couple pictures of my efforts. First is the hock kit with a small adjustment hammer made of brass and ash. The second are the blades getting ready for shipment to the heat...
Thanks guys, I just sent them (12) off the Texas Knifemaking in Houston. Going for Rc 62 and cryo treatment. I modeled it after the hock blade although I shortened the slot as I doubt that I will...
I actually have a small forge for treating knives and a toaster oven for tempering. However the forge is closed until it warms up outside.

I've taken the plunge and decided to make some Krenov style planes. I have already made one from the Hock kit. In my habit of going hard core diy, I have bought some A2 steel to grind the blades...
I've never seen gimlets at any retail store. I got my set years ago at Garrett Wade. My apron is from my high school woodworking class a real long time ago.
Eric
Don't laugh, but consumer reports actually recommends this one.

Thanks everyone for the links. Now I am overwhelmed by ideas. I hope Ruth's stoppers get here soon.

Are there any good books or magazine articles with bottle stopper patterns and dimensions. I have a real hard time visualising and getting the proportions right. I know what looks bad, but can't get...
My 12 year old son decided he wants to learn how to carve after our summer trip to Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. I had tried, but time is an issue. Anyway I started him off on a dove,...
