As opposed to Matt (above) I would steer you directly TOWARDS learning how to tune and use a hand plane. It is a very satisfying skill that will advance your craftsmanship faster and further than...
Andrew: with all respect hide glue is THE traditional glue. Many still prefer it over PVAs.
OP: I too love G&G and your table checks all the right boxes for me. Tremendous success!
I don't blame her. That is really cool.
It's a nice slab and you did it justice.
Just FYI I sell slabs like that for $100-150 or so. A good get, but hardly $400 good here in walnut country.
Not exactly "in the wild" but my brother-in-law just built a new house and the box I gave them years ago is now displayed on the mantle right under a genuine Miro painting. That was nice to see.
I agree that the claro walnut with coopered lid is a stunner, but what grabbed my eye was the bead on the base and feet. If you did that with hand tools I'd be obliged to hear about the process.
Everyone is understandably complimentary so my nature wants to find a flaw or two.
The overall design is very nice and the wood combination is one of those rare blends that feel just right....
So I find some more tiger maple and shape a long flowing arch in some feet. I have ample depth in the maple borders to shave more arch on the bottom and a big shallow arch to the top of the long side...
Second alternate title: Why Every Box I Make Ends up a Prototype
This might be a bit wordy, but I am trying to describe a journey and not just share the destination. (Some photos are staged using...
Solid wood will always want to move as moisture levels change, so I am not sure I get the epoxy suggestions unless it is lathered on so thick moisture never gets through it. Yes you can stabilize...
I think your design works really well. Gilpin is an admirable source of inspiration and having details emerge from the structure is completely logical. I'll bet a more distant photo taken from...
Those are both handsome mallets Eric. I have found a full 5 degrees off 90 to be too much and I think especially with that short handle you might find 2 or 3 degrees to be plenty. Try driving a...
Woodworkers see a lot of natural edge tops, so I think we tend to see them much the same. What really pops a natural edge top is the design of the base and legs. Here is where your piece wins the...
Attaching a top is always a challenge, so sometimes I leave it unattached. Overhangs all around make that possible.
Still, a hinged lid is nice. I default to Brusso butt hinges; don't let the...
I figured somebody would ask. I committed to getting the best oil finish I could, and I would repeat all of these steps:
Sand to 220
Wipe on a fairly dilute wash of transtint dye (dark vintage...
This is what I did: glue the front 3" and brad the remainder. The sides have contracted ~3/8" this winter and everything is still in one piece. I thought about the sliding dovetail - it is superior -...
I was impressed long ago by the beautiful simplicity of John Townsend's Queen Anne chest featured in Jeffrey Greene's spectacular "American Furniture of the 18th Century". The book included a full...
Please tell us what benefits you expect from such a move. It sounds like you have a dedicated space and bench already, so what extras come with a switch?
I don't have much else to offer or suggest...
I mentioned this to you before, but this piece does full justice to a terrific piece of wood and you cannot say better than that.
Basswood comes curly sometimes.
DRYING crotch wood is relatively difficult - perhaps that is where the unstable reputation comes from - but it is plenty stable once dry. The best figure is in the center making the slab essentially...
Jim's suggestion and my suspicions that he was correct made me return to the shop and texture the top of one as I had the bottom. Here it is with one coat of oil, plus the before picture for...
My wife insists that a "tray" must include border edges so grapes do not roll off of them, so these should be considered "trivets". You could use them for cheese platters (cheese rarely rolls), or as...
Thank you Jim (and all others for the nice comments). I too was really pleased with the underside but talked myself into thinking that function would prohibit carving the top. You have me reexamining...
