That tray was looking a little "Plain-Jane" ...Decided to dress it up a bit...
Set up the #45 as a beading plane, with a #23 bead cutter.

Fence covers the "outside " quirk. Skates are right behind each quirk. No depth stop needed.
Clamped the tray into the vise, and worked along the top edge, starting at the far end..
Attachment 369361
And worked my way back towards me...
Attachment 369362
Should have done the "short" sides first. Blew out one pin..rest of the corners weren't too hateful...
Attachment 369363
Had to look to keep the plane vertical, and had to clear the cutter alot..
Attachment 369364
Maple flavoured Ramon Noodles?
Did not take all that long, today..to get all four edges done...
Attachment 369365
If needed, I may sand the whole tray....for now it can sit in the chest...
Attachment 369366
Maybe tomorrow, I can apply a few coats of Amber shellac, inside and out?
Stay tuned...
Nicely done Steven.
Jim
Thank you..
Single Brain Cell Sketch Up has been working on a way to add a "keeper" to keep the lid opened. May be a Maple "Bar" that pivots up and into a "socket" on the inside of the lid? Then have the bar just drop down onto the tray's rail, when not in use? Picked up a length of chain this morning, will see how THAT goes..
Almost done, stay tuned...
Chain was 16' out of the package! Had to cut it for length with a pair of bolt cutters. Two pilot holes for the two screws.....chain is now installed....
May slip back to the shop, after bit...and see about milling that brace....we'll see. Film @ 2300 hrs....
Well, it is 2300 hrs..somewhere....
Attachment 369461
Chain is installed, and a brace is made. Brace engages a "D" shaped keeper. Chain can be tighter?
Attachment 369462
I lean the lid back to tighten the chain. The brace will then be able to dis-engage the keeper...
Attachment 369463
Then it can be folded down. Chain goes around it, to make sure the chain goes into the chest.
Maybe some finishing tomorrow? May have to do it IN the shop....that should be a fun time...
Last coat of Amber Shellac is now on. Looking into maybe adding some Red Cedar planks to line the floor with...we'll see
Other than that, and the top coat of clear gloss.....Project is about done.
Thanks for following along.
Blanket Chest has been moved upstairs ( whew, heavier than it looks ) and a "Photo Shoot" has been done. Calling this project done.

Front view, lid closed
Attachment 369795
Open the lid, engage the Lid Brace
Attachment 369796
Nothing inside, yet. Tray will slide all the way to the brace, if need be. Chain to keep the lid from going back too far.
Attachment 369797
Corner view. White line is an extension cord, for the Boss' light on the end table.
Thanks for following along. Not sure WHAT the next project will be....yet.
Very nice project and documentation-thanks.
Steven,
Nice job, it looks good in it' new home. It looks like it is bigger than I realized, nice storage capacity.
Good Job!
