Should I be thinking about going in and thinning out my uploaded pics
every now and then in re: due diligence to site's overall bandwidth use?
I currently have less than 3 MB (very small in and of itself) but
never even thought about it until now.

No, we don't have a problem with storage space. We upgrade drive space every time we purchase a new server and unlike most forums we feel our archives are valuable to everyone here and those to come. Also when you delete pictures you destroy the threads that they are in, most discussions depend on pictures.
Because of the Photo Bucket disaster most online Forums have lost the majority of their pictures which pretty much destroys their older threads.
This is good to hear. I have been banging the drum of "put your pics on the forum for thread integrity" ever since I got here. I would prohibit external pics but, this gets tricky if you want to allow external links to tools, articles, etc.
I think the move to allowing only 2 pictures to be uploaded at a time pushed a lot of folks to the external sites. I know I post vastly less pictures than I used to because it is just too much trouble. Other site allow 10 per post and that just about overs anything other than the full blown 'build journal' type posts.
Having to upload 2 pics and then go back and upload 2 more . . . I generally cut down the pics which cuts down the value of the thread.
Unless it is a factor of my moderator powers, I have no limit uploading photos in a single post.

There is an add-on for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera that appears to fix the Photobucket issue. I have this loaded in my browser on a Mac and it works great. The threads that used to have the Photobucket upgrade image now show the original image.

I wonder if there is a difference between a member and contributor on uploading pictures.
There is no difference in the amount of pictures you can upload, we all have the same limit including me. As I recall the limit is 5 pictures per post.
This will be a non-problem soon, everyone will love the file attachment upload feature in Xenforo its simple to use and works great.
The limit is currently 8 uploaded photos per post...I know that from all the photos I've been uploading lately. :)
I believe there is a limit of 15 linked images per post, too...and that includes "smilies"
By golly, you're right! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
And if you upload and insert a photo inline then delete it from the message body it still counts against the limit of 8 (and the thumbnail appears below the message) unless you delete it with Manage Attachments.
