Hi Roger, Have you seen one of the new G0800 or 0799 lathes? If so, how does the quality look? (Fit and finish and attention to detail?) There's no doubt the 766 is a massive machine for the money, but the others appealing too...

I'll introduce myself - - I joined last fall. I've made a lot of posts, so I am not really "new".

    I've been turning wood for only 3-5 years. I started with a 9" 1950's Sears lathe. I now own a G0766.

I belong to the San Diego Wood Turner club.

I have turned perhaps 30 to 50 different objects. I try to vary my design so that everything I do is different. I enjoy learning new things.

I have a different skill set than many turners - - I enjoy building tools as much as turning. I have built a dozen cutting tools, a captured hollower, a half dozen or more tool rests, a ball turner, and a monster hollower. My machine shop is as extensive as my wood turning shop. I am also a degreed electronic engineer.

I think that the "journey" is more important than the "destination".

I also enjoy photography, traveling, and also do metal casting.

Hello all, just joined the GGMG. My name is Jay Mullins, recently bought a new G0766 after retrofitting a detached garage. I have one turning done so far though not finished yet. Before moving up to the 766 I turned on an old English lathe ( Tyme ) . It's good to move up to a better lathe and have a shop just for turning. I'm retired and living in the Asheboro, NC area.

Hey guys. I just joined SMC (am a member on a couple other woodworking forums) and - consequently - this group as well. I've only been turning since last fall, but I have definitely been sucked into the vortex lol!

Got my start as a carpenter 17 years ago doing remodeling and such. Took my first job in an honest-to-goodness wood shop 8 years ago and haven't looked back since. Currently I work in commercial cabinetry & store fixtures, and I do way more machine programming and problem solving than woodworking these last couple years. That makes the time that i get to spend in my home shop behind the lathe all the more enjoyable, and needed.

Was turning on a Jet 1221vs until i sold it and ordered a G0766, which I will take delivery of on Wednesday!!

Welcome to the GGMG, Brian! Congrats on the new G0766. Lots of info on SMC and here on that lathe. Hope you will take time to read, as the 0766 is manufactured with some metric dimensions as iterations of the lathe are sold overseas. For instance the hole in the banjo where the tool rest post fits is 25mm, and most owners want to open that up to 1" to accommodate aftermarket rests, etc,....let us know if you have questions.....this is a good lathe!

    Brian,
To add to what Roger said, there are some things that you might want to eventually address on your new G0766 lathe:

    1. Bore out banjo hole to 1.000" as it is a more standard size. Follow the methods posted on this forum
    2. Take a file and reduce the OD of the shoulder of the spindle being careful not to touch the "register". Although the spindle is 1.250, Grizzly makes the shoulder 1.260. A number of aftermarket chucks and faceplates won't fit. Ten minutes and a file will fix that.
    3. If you are planning on using a vacuum chuck with a 3/8" vacuum tube that needs to go through the spindle, a number of the G0766 were or are made so that the holes from each end of the spindle don't line up and won't let a 3/8" tube go through.

    Enjoy your new lathe.
